Brutal workplace attack may cost man his eye
06:46 PM CDT on Monday, April 9, 2007
A young man says he had absolutely no warning about a brutal attack that was over in less than a minute, but may have impacted the rest of his life.
Matt was the victim of a vicious assault in the parking lot of a popular nightspot where he works security – an attack that could cost him his eye. He asked that his last name be withheld because the people who attacked him two weeks ago are still on the loose.

Matt could lose his eye after a brutal attack at the Firehouse Saloon.
“Anything can happen at any time. Don’t think ‘it won’t happen to me.’ That’s probably when it will happen if you think that way,” he said.
Matt said he was making the rounds during the early morning hours at the Firehouse Saloon when a man and a woman approached him, demanding his wallet.
“I think I just looked away. That’s when he took his chance to hit me. He hit me with the butt end of the gun,” Matt said.
The impact shattered his left eye socket and sent Matt to the ground. As he fell, the gun went off, shooting him in his left shoulder. The suspects ran away, leaving the wallet behind and possibly robbing Matt of something far more precious – his sight.
Doctors operated on his eye a few days later.
“They were able to save it in surgery, “Matt said. “I wish they had hit me anywhere but my eye. It’s kind of a waiting game.”
There is no guarantee if the surgery will save Matt’s eye. The 25-year-old victim is left only to wonder why anyone would do something so cruel.
Police plant o release a composite sketch of the suspects Tuesday.
Private donors at the Firehouse Saloon are offering a $1,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
