Residents of Baytown were relieved Wednesday after a suspected rapist was arrested.

The suspect, 19-year-old Baytown resident Keith Chester Hill, has been charged with one incident, but investigators say he could be involved in as many as five.

Hill took part in five lineups today, and the Harris County’ Sheriff’s Department said one victim identified Hill from one of those lineups for a home invasion.

The district attorney’s office has also accepted aggravated robbery charges against Hill.

But Baytown police say even more charges could follow.

Baytown Police Department Lt. David Alford credits the Baytown Talk blog, which he frequently monitored for information on the case, with keeping the search for the rapist in the spotlight.

“It’s just another example of how a well-informed public can work in tandem with a police department.  And the bad guys don’t stand a chance,” Alford said.

Police arrested and charged Hill with aggravated sexual assault and aggravated kidnapping in the rape of a young teen back in May of 2006.

Detectives said DNA given voluntarily by Hill matched evidence taken from the victim.

“We did not actually make him a suspect until recently, but he has certainly been a person of interest that we were looking forward to finding more out about him. When we were able to get a sample of DNA evidence, we were able to link him to the case in that way,” Capt. Roger Clifford said.

Police believe Hill could be responsible for several other attacks on young men dating back to April 2006.

News of his arrest came as relief to Baytown residents.

“Personally I’d like to castrate him myself, but I think it’s great that they caught him,” Lynn Senesac said.

“I’m blown away. That’s so great that they did that, because we actually know one of the victims. So that’s really good news, I’m glad to hear that,” Gary Flores said.

But police say it’s the bloggers who kept this issue alive in cyberspace who truly deserve credit.

“It showed the concern here in the community and in Baytown locally.  People were in fear.  They were in fear for their children, for their sons. And I appreciate the focus that they had,” Capt. Clifford said.

In the attacks Hill is accused of, his victims said he mainly used a gun or a knife.  Police say his main motivation was total domination and sexual gratification.
