CHAMBERS COUNTY, Texas – A 56-year-old man was arrested after deputies said he shot and killed another driver during an argument Friday night in Hankamer.
According to the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, Larry Dewayne Brinkley, of Houston, is charged with murder.
“We had a road rage incident that turned into murder,” said Sheriff Hawthorne.
Deputies said that at 9:30 p.m. Brinkley was driving his 15-year-old daughter home when, according to witnesses, he cut off another vehicle on the road.
When Brinkley arrived at the 500 block of Barrow Cemetery Road in Hankamer, the other vehicle, which had been cut off, pulled in behind him, deputies said. The driver of the second vehicle has been identified as Leslie Larrison.
Deputies said it appears the two got into an argument about Brinkley cutting him off. Then Brinkley went back to his truck, got a hand gun and shot 54-year-old Larrison, killing him.
The victim’s 10-year-old grandson, who witnessed the incident, got out of the truck and found his grandfather dead, deputies said. Brinkley fled the scene and was later apprehended by Chambers County Sheriff’s deputies after a brief pursuit.
The handgun used in the shooting was found covered in blood and was recovered as evidence, deputies said. The victim was unarmed and appears not to have had any previous contact with the suspect prior to this incident.
Brinkley is being held in Chambers County Jail on $750,000 bond.
