Cash, coins will soon be banned on Hardy Toll Road

Coins and cash will soon be banned on the Hardy Toll Road. Drivers will have to use an EZ tag, beginning July 15. The Harris County Toll Road Authority says it's making the change to improve safety.

Coins and cash will be banned on the Hardy Toll Road beginning July 15. Drivers will need an EZ Tag in an effort to improve safety.

"As the traffic grows, it got to the point where we just couldn't safely collect cash on the roadway,” said Quinton Alberto with HCTRA.

All 22 miles the Hardy will shut down beginning Friday at noon to demolish the toll plazas. The work will continue through the weekend.

Alberto said 80 to 90-percent of Hardy drivers already use an EZ tag.

Drivers caught off guard without one will get one chance to waive the fees before they get a bill in the mail from HCTRA.

You can buy EZ Tags at Valeros and HEBs or online.
