HOUSTON—Two people tried to save a man from a burning car Monday night, but they were driven back by the flames.

It happened around 9:30 p.m. at Chelsea Park on Highland Knolls.

Police said a man was traveling at a high rate of speed in a sedan eastbound on Highland Knolls when he clipped another car, lost control and crashed into a tree.

The sedan burst into flames, and the man was trapped inside.

The driver of the other car and a nearby resident rushed to the burning car to try to help, but there was nothing they could do.

The sedan driver died at the scene.

"I ran to get a real big fire extinguisher, and I ran up to the car and could see the occupant in there, but it was too late and too hot," neighbor Stuart Stauffacher said.

Stauffacher said drivers often speed down the street, and he’s seen several accidents there before.

The identity of the victim was not known.

Good to see all these Indy500 driving idiots meet their death. Give them a funeral, scrap the car and keep or streets safer.
