BROOKSHIRE—One day after a double murder in the small city of Brookshire, police seem to be making progress in their investigation.
"Things are starting to point in the right direction now," said Brookshire Police Chief Joe Prejean, after spending several hours questioning a man they now call their only suspect.
Police have not charged the man and are not releasing his identity. They believe he knew the victims, Stanley Jackson and Janelle Edwards, who were found shot to death in their Third Avenue home early Thursday morning.
"We’re still looking at robbery as the likely motive because there was a large sum of money missing from the house," added Prejean.
Jackson and Edwards were babysitting the mayor’s two daughters when the shootings took place. The mayor’s children were not injured.
Both victims hail from large families. Jackson’s mother said they were both well-loved in this community of 4,000.
"They were good people and I don’t know why anyone would want to take their lives," said Lee Edwards.
Police are working with the Waller County Sheriff’s Office and Texas Rangers.
Authorities are now offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.
The investigation seems to be gathering steam, but Prejean said it could be days before an arrest is announced.
"We’re going to move slowly and make sure that we’re 100 percent right. We owe that to the victims," he said.
