Brazoria Co. creates storm to save lives
05:24 PM CDT on Tuesday, April 29, 2008
In Brazoria County, officials used this wonderful Tuesday to create the first if its kind fictitious storm.
Brazoria County leaders spearheaded the effort as a way to test their readiness to evacuate the entire county in a major disaster.
Helping out were dozens of senior citizens.
All of them volunteered to evacuate from Freeport to Angleton.
Marilyn Saccomanno said she was more than happy to help. “Our area knows that this is part of life down here.”
In fact, she and others with her have evacuated on their own during a real hurricane.
Every county in Texas has a list of people who need help evacuating.
Still, leaders in Brazoria County feel their numbers are low.
In fact, some cities only have 50 or 60 people on their 211 emergency lists.
“We feel that is a little light because during Hurricane Rita we had more people than that, but then again not everybody registers until there is a storm in the gulf,” said Kim Knapp. She’s with the City of Lake Jackson.
So, Tuesday’s fictitious storm blows in with one message which is if you need help evacuating your city in a future emergency situation dial 211 and register with your county.
That action will ensure that the next disaster doesn’t take you by storm.
