Heavy rain wreaks havoc all over area

Severe thunderstorms with torrential rains and a possible tornado hit Southeast Texas overnight, killing at least four people, flooding roads and shutting down numerous schools Monday.

According to Dr. Neil Frank, things may be getting better as the day goes by.

"The big news is that the nasty line of thunderstorms extending from eastern Liberty County to eastern Harris County to Pasadena to Bay City is moving to the northeast. The line of storms is drifting slowly to the southeast," said Dr. Frank.

Harris and surrounding counties are under flash flood warning until 10 a.m. Tuesday.

"We might even see clearing of the skies tonight and perhaps a little sunshine tomorrow," he said.

Several people had to be rescued after driving into high water.

As much as 10 inches of rain fell in the Houston-Galveston area. More rain was expected across Texas on Monday, with the possibility of damaging winds and flooding, the National Weather Service said.

Two women were found dead in a sport utility vehicle on a heavily flooded roadway in Houston Monday morning. A police spokesman didn’t know the extent of the flooding, but broadcast reports said the SUV was in 8 feet of water.

In the Fort Bend County town of Needville, a 56-year-old man died when his vehicle went into a flooded ditch.   Officials believe the car hydroplaned on Farm Road 1462.

In Brazoria County, one person was killed in a two-car accident at FM 1459 at FM 522 around 8:30 Monday morning.

Ten people were injured in a car accident on I-10 and San Jacinto, according to the Harris County judge's office.

Well over a dozen Houston-area public schools and the Galveston public school system canceled classes Monday because of power outages and flooded roads.

The coastal counties of Brazoria, Chambers and Galveston are under a coastal flood warning because of the unusually high tides. It lasts until 4 a.m. Tuesday.

The downtown area had about 5 inches of rain overnight. Liberty County had upwards of 5 to 7 inches.

So far there have been no reports of any tornados touching down. But there was wind damage in Hitchcock and Tiki Island in Galveston County.

The Red Cross set up a shelter at the Leon Grayson Community Center in Channelview. It's located at 13828 Corpus Christi Street. "Residents from a nearby trailer park requested the shelter because trees have fallen on some of their trailer homes," said Red Cross spokesperson Denise Bishop.

Flooded roads made it nearly impossible to get in and out of Livingston in Polk County. High water shut down Hwy. 59 and Hwy. 55 in both directions. About 50 residents of the Schoals Creek Subdivision were evacuated.

According to CenterPoint Energy, about 13,000 customers were without power throughout the area.

South of Houston, as many as 20 homes were damaged when a suspected tornado roared through Magnolia Beach before daybreak, Calhoun County Sheriff B.B. Browning said. The only injury reported in the small community 75 miles northeast of Corpus Christi was a cut thumb a man suffered from flying glass, he said.

Authorities also were investigating reports that high winds destroyed two mobile homes and severely damaged another structure in the town of China, about 60 miles northeast of Houston, a Jefferson County official said.

In Dallas, up to four inches of rain prompted flash flood warnings. Flood advisories also were issued for other parts of North and West Texas.

The storms were expected to continue across North and East Texas before tapering off late Monday night, said forecaster Joe Harris.

In Louisiana, three people were hurt early Monday when strong winds blew through the fishing community of Leeville, 90 miles south of New Orleans, authorities said.

An elderly couple was rescued from an overturned trailer. The woman suffered a broken arm, while her husband was treated for bruises and lacerations, said Larry Weidel, a spokesman for the Lafourche Parish sheriff. Another person was treated for a knee injury, he said. The storm sank at least two boats, as well.
