HOUSTON - I hope your Thanksgiving was good! My secret to doing the weather after a big meal is to enjoy a black cup of coffee. I was lucky enough to be able to spend this holiday with my wife's family and we ate way too much because it was all way too good! (I'm excited to see my folks over Christmas.)
Now that we've finished the feast and expressed our gratitude for how lucky we are to have the opportunities we enjoy in this country, all eyes turn to Black Friday! I know you're scoffing, "Black Friday, Brooks? Really? Com'on... speaking of, 'this country', that's the epitome of American consumerism at its worst!" Well... I agree that skipping Thanksgiving family-time to stand in line so you're the first at the door, isn't my cup of choice (it is a great way to avoid political conversations), this year's Black Friday deals for Harvey-victims will serve as an avenue to get back to to where they were pre-flood, much faster.
Only 20% carried FEMA flood insurance when the 25,000 year storm hit, which means hundreds of thousands of people couldn't get the basics replaced by their homeowner's policy, like washers/dryers/beds -- and yes, even that big-screen TV. These sales will provide the discounts to help so many find their sense of, "normal" faster.
It's also a reminder for those were lucky enough to emerge from the floods relatively unscathed, to be especially thankful for our good fortune on this Thanksgiving. Another thing to be thankful for? We're going to be treated to an extended stretch of very pleasant weather, with sunshine-filled skies and highs in the 70s. Perfect weather to install the new appliances or to go shopping for the holidays!
