HOUSTON—The 16-year-old accused of killing a classmate in a satanic ritual will not go home anytime soon.

The teen, whose name has not been released because of his age, is charged with capital murder.

He went before a juvenile court judge Wednesday who ordered him to stay in detention until his next hearing. His mother and grandfather were in court for the hearing and both were emotional.

Prosecutors say the suspect helped kidnap, rape and murder 15-year-old Corianne Cervantes. Her body was discovered over the weekend inside a vacant apartment at the Bay Apartments in the 16400 block of El Camino Real. She had disappeared days earlier.

Cervantes was tortured and beaten with an ashtray and toilet lid because the 16-year-old wanted to "sell his soul to the devil," according to prosecutors.

The killers also carved an upside down crucifix on her abdomen and her body was surrounded by satanic cult items.

"What happened in that vacant apartment was sadistic," Prosecutor John Jordan said. "What will eventually happen in the 338th district courtroom will be justice."

The other suspect, 17-year-old Jose Reyes, is also charged with capital murder. Both suspects could face life in prison if convicted.  He is too young to get the death penalty.

Prosecutors say the 16-year-old suspect knew Cervantes. They both attended Clear Path Alternative School in the Clear Creek ISD.
