HOUSTON -- A wrecker driver was shot by a man who was trying to break into his truck early Sunday morning, Houston police said.

The shooting was reported around 2:30 a.m. on Aldine Bender Road at Imperial Valley Drive.

Police said the driver was sitting in his tow truck outside the apartment complex where he lives when an unknown man walked up and started trying to break into the vehicle. The driver jumped out and confronted the crook, who then pulled out a gun and shot several times at the driver before running away.

The wrecker driver was shot once in the chest and was sent to the hospital in serious but stable condition. The suspect got away.

Police said the truck’s windows were heavily tinted, so it was unknown if the gunman knew the driver was in the truck when he started to break in.
