HOUSTON -- Houston police say a woman wanting a driving lesson was killed and her 10-year-old son was critically hurt when she wrecked an SUV in a store parking lot on the south side of town.

Police on Wednesday didn’t immediately release names of the 28-year-old woman or details on the hospitalized boy.

Investigators say the woman was with a man in his vehicle Tuesday night in a Houston parking lot. Her two children were also in the SUV.

The incident happened around 7 p.m. near Almeda Mall along the Gulf Freeway.

The man and the woman’s daughter stepped out, the woman jumped into the driver’s seat and asked the man to teach her to drive. Police say the woman released the hand brake and stepped on the accelerator.

The SUV hit a furniture store and then a parked car. Police say the woman wasn’t wearing a seat belt and died at the scene.
