HOUSTON—One woman has been on an illegal shopping spree across Southeast Texas, hitting up Walmart and Target stores with checks that are not hers, according to police.

Investigators said the woman has written no less than 26 forged checks at various stores from Galveston to Huntsville.

Police said the suspect’s spree began at the beginning of June and the last known check was passed on July 12. Police said the suspect uses the victim’s bank account information but uses different names and addresses on the checks. It also appears the suspect has the victim’s Texas Driver’s License number, but presents a fake license to store clerks when asked for identification. At this time it is unknown how the suspect obtained her victim’s information.

Police said $15,000 has been stolen using the fraudulent information as of July 12.

Surveillance cameras at three separate Target locations captured the same woman using the forged checks to purchase items. At this time it is unclear if she is the only suspect or she has others helping her.

Crime Stoppers will pay up to $5,000 for any information called in to the 713-222-8477 tips hotline or submitted online at www.crimestoppers.org that leads to the identification, charging or arrest of the suspect in this case. Tips can also be sent by text message - Text TIP610 plus your tip to CRIMES (274637). All tipsters remain anonymous.
