HOUSTON –- A woman was killed when she stepped into traffic on Westheimer Road and was struck by a passing vehicle early New Year’s Day, police said.

According to the Houston Police Department, the incident was reported around 2:30 a.m. west of Fountain View Drive.

Police said a driver was traveling eastbound when the woman, who appeared to be in her 40s, stepped into the road. She was struck and died at the scene.

“There’s no signs that she was intoxicated, we didn’t smell any alcohol on her,” said HPD Sgt. J.D. Rossman. “Witnesses reported she was possible talking on her cell phone as she was walking across the street.”

The driver remained at the scene and was questioned by police before being released.

Investigators said the pedestrian was at-fault for the incident, and no charges are expected in the case.
