HOUSTON -- Police are searching for a driver that struck a woman stalled on the freeway with a flat tire and continued going. It happened on the North Freeway at Cottage early Sunday.
Police said around 3:30 a.m., the woman was traveling in a red car when her tire blew out on the North Freeway. She stopped in the moving lane and got out of her car. That is when a driver in a dark-colored car struck her and continued going. Police said the driver could not have seen the woman until the last second and attempted to swerve, but ended up hitting the woman and her open driver’s side door.
The woman was thrown into the far left lane. She was transported to Ben Taub hospital in critical condition.
Police said the striking motorist likely would not have faced charges, but now faces felony hit-and-run charges for fleeing the scene. The North Freeway was completely shut down southbound until the accident was cleared.
