HOUSTON – A woman has been arrested and charged with murder in connection with a fatal stabbing that happened in northeast Houston on New Year’s Eve.

Investigators said Karen Kiriago, 49, fatally stabbed her common-law husband Van Rogers, 54, at an apartment located in the 7100 block of Parker at about 8:25 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2013.

Kiriago, initially told investigators that she was preparing dinner when Rogers stepped outside his apartment with a friend and returned to the apartment a short time later with a stab wound to the chest.

Houston Fire Department paramedics responded to the scene and transported Rogers to the hospital, where he died.

Kiriago was identified as a suspect after further investigation, police said. Investigators learned she had fled the Houston area.  She was arrested in Henderson, Texas on March 6 and was extradited back to Harris County.

Kiriago made her first court appearance Tuesday.
