HOUSTON— A woman who was walking hand-in-hand with her husband was struck and killed by an SUV near Third Ward late Wednesday, according to Houston police.

The couple had just left a dinner party and was walking to their car in the 4300 block of S. MacGregor around 9 p.m.

Just as they were about to cross the street, a woman driving a Chrysler Pacifica eastbound hit the wife, sending her flying into the air.

The driver said she did not see the couple until the last minute and tried to slam on her brakes, but could not avoid striking the wife.

The victim was identified as 62-year-old Deborah Crump. Officials said she suffered a severe head wound and was rushed to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she later died.

The driver consented to a blood draw and was not speeding at the time of the accident.

Officers said this was a tragic accident and no charges were expected to be filed.

Crump was the school nurse at River Oaks Baptist School. School officials released the following statement Thursday:

“The River Oaks Baptist community is greatly saddened by the loss of Deborah Crump, our beloved school nurse. Deborah tended to the needs of our students, their parents, and her colleagues for 14 years. She loved working closely with our students, and our priority right now is to take care of them. Counselors and pastoral staff are available on campus to provide counseling and support for our children and co-workers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Deborah’s family and friends during this most difficult time. We take comfort in our confidence that Deborah is with God, and that He is in our midst, even on our darkest days.”

Crump’s husband is an executive with a Houston oil company.
