HOUSTON –- A motorcycle rider was killed after he ran a red light and hit a car at an intersection on the edge of Midtown early Thursday morning, witnesses told police.

According to the Houston Police Department, the crash happened around 2:15 a.m. on Elgin Street at Hamilton Street. Police said the motorcyclist was traveling eastbound on Elgin when he hit a Toyota Camry at the intersection.

“He ran the red light, from what witnesses are saying,” said an officer at the scene. “At the time he ran the red light, he struck a vehicle that was traveling southbound on Hamilton, and he was thrown from the motorcycle onto the ground.”

Witnesses told KHOU 11 News the rider flew at least 10 to 15 feet in the air before hitting the ground. A passerby ran over and tried to perform CPR on him.

The rider was wearing a helmet, but the impact was too great for him to survive, police said, and he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The female driver in the car was not injured. She was questioned at the scene and released.
