HOUSTON – Are you looking for work? Check out UPS.

Right now, UPS has 800 jobs available. They’re offering seasonal positions, but 11 News got an inside tip. UPS said the hires who do well during the temporary employment get top priority when hiring for full-time positions. Not only that, but UPS is offering a job where you can work right in your own neighborhood.

Here’s how it works:

UPS is hiring both package handlers and driver helpers. The handlers are moving the packages either on and off the trucks or from within the various distribution centers. The driver helpers fill a job you might not have heard of before. They meet a UPS driver in their neighborhood or an adjacent neighborhood and help deliver the packages. That’s right – driver helpers play Santa and go door-to-door with the driver.

It’s more convenient, because you don’t have to commute to an office, explained UPS’ John Liddle.

"You could hook up with the delivery driver in your neighborhood or in an adjacent neighborhood where it would be just a short drive to meet up with a driver and then assist him or her in delivering packages to our customers during the holiday season," said Liddle.

Experts say that while these positions are mostly seasonal, it’s proven to be easier to get a job when you already have one.

FedEx is also hiring seasonal employees right now.

There are certainly worse companies to work for. UPS pays well, even the sorters and loaders, benefits for part time workers after 60 or 90 days, and paid vacation and sick days. The work is fast paced and hard, but worth it. Only down side...the summers are miserable. They have fans, but it just pushes the heat around. Oh well, it's Houston.

Only a fool would work for a company that has 800 available positions in a job market like this. That should tell you a lot about UPS.

I hope they hire people that can read. Last year during the holidays, UPS delivered 3 of my packages to the wrong address. Two of them weren't even on my street. The names of the streets aren't even similar. One of the packages contained a gift that cost over $800. When I called UPS regarding all three incidences, they told me, "We're sorry...that happens a lot during the holidays because we hire extra drivers. The temporary drivers deliver to residences while our full time drivers only deliver to businesses." That's still no excuse for the incompetence of their drivers. I was lucky that I did receive all of my packages because my honest neighbors brought them to my house.

"Only a fool would work for a company that has 800 available positions in a job market like this. That should tell you a lot about UPS." Are you serious? Guess you don't know what a surge in business the holidays bring to UPS and FedEx. They need extra manpower to help unload the planes, trains, and tractor trailers. They need help sorting the packages, help to load said packages into the delivery trucks, and then the drivers need assistance in getting all the packages to the customers. Business loads can DOUBLE during November and December. Only a fool would make such an uneducated comment without thinking things through. UPS does this kind of temp hiring every year.
