Wharton County man dies from West Nile Virus

EL CAMPO, Texas – An elderly Wharton County man has died from the West Nile Virus.

It’s the first confirmed case of West Nile in Wharton County, with one other confirmation pending.

The man was in his late 70s and lived just outside of El Campo and had underlying medical conditions. Neighbors identified him as William Hawkins.

He was hospitalized on August 9. The man was later transferred to a Houston hospital but doctors weren’t able to save him.

There have been a total of 19 West Nile cases in Houston and Harris County with three deaths.
