HOUSTON—A 19-year-old man is facing murder charges after his 39-year-old girlfriend was found dead Wednesday inside a west Harris County apartment.

Deputies said at 2:30 a.m. they received a 911 call from Jose Salas-Bustamante, the victim’s boyfriend, at an apartment unit located in the 19300 block of Park Row near Greenhouse.

Salas-Bustamante said he woke up and found Brandy Renger unconscious and bleeding in the living room of the one-bedroom apartment, which he shared with his mother, deputies said.  Westlake Fire Department EMTs arrived to find the woman dead, with trauma to the head, neck and upper body.

Detectives said the victim was spending the night with her boyfriend and his mother.

“When deputies arrived on the scene, they were able to confirm we have a deceased female in one of the apartments, we have two persons that reside in the apartment that we are in the process of obtaining statements from,” said Sgt, Ben Bell with the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Harris County Sheriff’s Office Homicide Investigators and Crime Scene Units responded to the scene and found Salas-Bustamante had changed clothes and attempted to clean the apartment, prior to calling 911, deputies said.

Salas-Bustamante and his mother were transported to the homicide office Wednesday for questioning. Deputies said he provided investigators with conflicting versions of the night’s events.

Homicide detectives arrested his mother Caroline Bustamante-Salas Thursday and charged her with tampering/fabricating physical evidence.

The medical examiner’s office will determine the victim’s official cause of death.
