HOUSTON – The driver of a sport utility vehicle slammed into two Precinct 5 deputy constable patrol cars on the Beltway 8 early Wednesday, sending one officer to the hospital, police said.
The incident was reported around 3:30 a.m., according to Houston Transtar.
An early investigation indicated the white SUV crossed all four lanes of the tollway before slamming into the cruisers. At the time of the crash, the deputies were stopped on the shoulder, carrying out a traffic stop.
One of the deputies was sent to Memorial Hermann Hospital in stable condition and was expected to make a full recovery.
The other deputy managed to avoid being hit by jumping over a retaining wall, said Pct. 5 Assistant Chief Randy Johnson.
The crash closed all northbound main lanes of the West Sam Houston Tollway for more than two hours, but the lanes reopened shortly before 6 a.m.
