HOUSTON – The University of Houston Police Department was investigating a series of cell phone thefts that have occurred in the past two weeks.
Each of these cases has a similar suspect description and similar method of operation.
In these incidents, the suspect approaches students and asks to borrow their cell phone, then runs away when the student’s attention is elsewhere.
The suspect has not been aggressive or violent in any instance.
Three of these incidents occurred last week, and two this week. The locations of the thefts were MD Anderson Library, Melcher Hall, and the UC Satellite dining area.
A friend of one of the victims was able to capture a photo of the suspect on Wednesday.
The suspect has used the name “Michael” in at least two instances, and may carry a black backpack.
