HOUSTON – The Houston Cougars completed one of the most exciting weeks in program history Saturday when they beat UTEP to win the Conference USA Championship.
Sunday, they found out who their first opponent will be in the NCAA Tournament.
UH is seeded No. 13 in the Midwest Regional and will face the No. 4 seed Maryland on Friday in Spokane, Washington.
This is the first time the University of Houston has been invited to the NCAA Tournament since 1992, and it is the fourth team head coach Tom Penders has taken to the Big Dance.
The season started with promise, but the Cougars never seemed to put it together for an entire game all season long.
Aubrey Coleman and Kelvin Lewis led the way from the very beginning. Coleman has been ranked first in the nation in scoring average all season, starting when he scored 33 points against Nicholls State. He finished the regular season with 25.6 PPG average.
Lewis is the team’s second-leading scorer, averaging 15.3 points per game.
