HOUSTON -- TxDOT is trying something new in hopes of preventing crashes caused by people texting while driving.
They used a 750-pound cell phone to illustrate that one in five traffic crashes in Texas was caused by distracted drivers. In 2013, 505 people were killed, and another 19,000 were injured in distracted driving accidents.
Patricia Small lost her daughter when a texting driver hit her head on. She shared her message for drivers.
“Is it really worth it,” said Small. ‘Just turn them off.”
Nearly half of Texas drivers admitted to Texas A&M researchers they used a cell phone while driving.
