CLEVELAND, Texas -- Investigators say two people have drowned in a canoeing accident during a religious retreat at a Southeast Texas lake.
The San Jacinto County Sheriff’s Office says the bodies were recovered Sunday afternoon from the small lake near Cleveland.
Justice of the Peace Randy Ellisor says neither victim could swim. They’re identified as 15-year-old Lewis Aguilar Berrios and 21-year-old Solero Neftal, both of Houston.
Officials say one victim was in a canoe that capsized Sunday morning. The other victim was in another canoe but jumped into the water to try to help. Neither wore a life jacket.
Further details on the accident were not immediately available Monday.
The retreat was organized by Gracia Divina Ministries in Houston.
