HFD firefighters travel to West, Texas following plant explosion

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – An 80-member team from Texas Task Force 1 in College Station arrived in the town of West early Thursday following an overnight plant explosion.

A spokesman said the team has five search dogs and special tools to assist in the rescue efforts.

The Houston Fire Department said 19 of its firefighters were part of Thursday’s group traveling to West, Texas where more than 100 people were reportedly injured in a plant explosion that leveled part of the town.

On its website, Texas Task Force 1 says it’s the “most deployed urban search and rescue team in the country.”

The group has 510 personnel including three 70-person US&R teams and 300 water rescue personnel, according to the website.
