HOUSTON—Texas Southern University officials handed down penalties for students involved in a hazing incident Tuesday, after the marching band was suspended in late September amid accusations.
Band members found guilty of hazing will be immediately suspended from the school, permanently removed from band and have their band scholarships revoked, according to a TSU press release. Individual scholarships could be as much as $10,000 a year.
Sanctions are subject to appeal by the students.
School authorities have not released details about the hazing event, but some students say that it involved paddling.
Officials are looking at lifting the suspension for those members of Ocean of Soul not involved in hazing but stipulate that there will be restrictions. The 180-student band can reportedly expect to see reduced performances and community service requirements.
"There is no tolerance for hazing at the university," said TSU spokesperson Eva Pickens in a statement.
