PASADENA, Texas – Pasadena police are searching for two suspects who beat and shot a bicyclist during an attempted robbery Thursday morning.
The crime has shaken up residents of the normally peaceful neighborhood.
Police said a man in his 20s was riding his bicycle on Watters Road and Palos Verdes Drive around 9:30 a.m. when two men in a maroon-colored sedan stopped him.
"He was going down the road. Two Hispanic males demanded his cell phone and his money. I don’t know what words were exchanged after that," said Vance Mitchell with the Pasadena Police Department.
The suspects pistol-whipped the victim and then shot him in the neck, police said.
"I heard a couple of pop pops and I thought it was gunfire, but I wasn’t sure," said Brinda Smith, a neighbor.
George Fontenot’s wife heard the victim screaming for help.
"When she drove back by, she said he had blood all over his back," Fontenot said.
He rushed outside to see if he could help.
"I heard Life Flight coming through. I called my wife and I said there were 50 cops out here," Fontenot said.
The victim was airlifted to Memorial Hermann Hospital. His condition is not known.
Investigators believe the victim was targeted randomly.
They talked with nearby homeowners who may have witnessed the event.
They are also hoping to get surveillance video. The shooting happened right next to two churches: Watters Road Church of Christ; and the First Church of Nazarene.
