LA MARQUE, Texas – A suspect is in custody after he robbed a bank with a fake bomb in La Marque on Saturday.

It happened at the Regions Bank in the 6400 block of Gulf Freeway around 11 a.m.

Police said the suspect drove up to the drive-through and placed what look like a bomb in the transfer tube.

Authorities said the suspect demanded the teller to send as much money as he could in 15 minutes. After the suspect got the money, he drove away.

The teller got a description of the vehicle and notified police.

Officers rushed to the scene and saw the suspect’s vehicle on the Gulf Freeway near Vauthier. They stopped the car and noticed a large amount of money in the passenger seat.

The suspect was taken into custody.

Worried that the suspect’s SUV contained explosives, police blocked the Gulf Freeway southbound lanes for more than an hour while officers searched the vehicle.

Houston police bomb squad officers were called to the scene and eventually determined the suspect’s device was not a threat.

Police said charges against the suspect were still pending.

No injuries were reported.
