HOUSTON – The teen, who fired a gun during a fight near Cy Lakes High School that left one person injured last month, was arrested Tuesday during an attempted burglary in northwest Harris County, deputies said.
According to the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, John Randy Newkirk, 18, was arrested after he was caught trying to break into a home.
Deputies had been looking for Newkirk as the suspect who fired a gun several times during a Feb. 21 fight in a field near the 19000 block of Sandelford Drive.
According to investigators, the off-campus fight, which was witnessed by dozens, was between two students who’d been feuding since the day before.
Newkirk and Aurelio Navarro, 19, are not students at the school but had shown up to the fight as ‘backup’ for one of the people involved, investigators said. When Newkirk saw that Navarro was getting beaten badly, he discharged the gun several times.
No one was hurt by the gunfire, investigators said. Navarro was taken to an area hospital with serious injuries from the physical altercation.
Newkirk remains in custody and is charged with discharging of a firearm in the first incident and criminal trespass for the attempted burglary.
Investigators also believe Newkirk is responsible for other crimes in the area and additional charges may be filed.
