HOUSTON –- A suspect with several warrants was shot dead just outside the KHOU studios early Monday morning after exchanging gunfire with officers, police said.
The incident started as a chase on the southside of town around 12:45 a.m. Monday.
Officers with the Houston Police Department said the suspect, with a female passenger in his car, led them from I-45 at Monroe Road to Allen Parkway.
Shots were exchanged between the suspect and police along the way, according to officers.
HPD said the suspect lost control of his sedan on Allen Parkway near Stanford, and both he and the female passenger jumped out.
"The suspect did stop the vehicle and fired multiple times at officers who were pursuing him," said HPD spokesman Victor Senties. "The vehicle lost control and crashed here at 1900 block. A male and a female passenger immediately exited the vehicle and fled on foot."
The male suspect was shot and died at the scene after taking more shots at the officers, police said. The female passenger was caught and taken into custody uninjured.
No officers were harmed in the incident, but HPD said one of the suspect's bullets struck a patrol car. Police believe he may have been under the influence of a drug.
Allen Parkway remained closed in both directions for about five hours following the incident.
As of 6 a.m., the road's eastbound lanes remained closed.
