HOUSTON – A suspect is in jail after a woman holding her baby was injured in a hit-and-run wreck in north Houston on Saturday.

Ricardo Brena Cruz, 29, was charged with failure to stop and render aid, a third-degree felony.

According to court documents, a woman was getting her daughter out of her car after it broke down in the 1200 block of North Sam Houston Parkway when she was hit by a red Camero.

The woman reportedly flew about two car lengths and landed on her back still holding her child.

Authorities said the Camero stopped for a moment, then reversed and fled the scene.

The victim gave officers the license plate of the Camero, which police traced back to Cruz.

Authorities approached Cruz about the accident. He told police through a translator that he was on the tollway when he changed lanes to avoid an accident and hit the woman. He said he saw the victim get up before he fled the scene.

When asked why he drove away, Cruz said he was scared and did not want a ticket.

The woman was transported to the hospital and diagnosed with a fractured leg.

Cruz remains in custody without bail.
