HARRIS COUNTY, Texas – About 90 horses were safe Friday after they were rescued from their flooding stables Thursday afternoon, but the Cypress Rosehill Equestrian Center said they lost some equipment and hay.
The stables, located in the 17000 block of Cypress Rosehill, started taking on water late Thursday after Cypress Creek left its banks.
Soon, it rose to the point that some of the smaller horses were swimming in their stalls.
But a group of volunteers sprang into action and evacuated each and every horse safely. They were taken to Sam Houston Race Park.
"They’re trying to get away, and even though we’re trying to lead them out to safety, they don’t know that. All they know is they’re fighting for their lives. So they’re fighting and struggling. It was quite an experience," horse owner Bernard Mepoyer said.
There was still some water standing in the stables Friday, and staff at the equestrian center were trying to tally up what all was lost.
They said it could be weeks before they’re able to resume operations.
