SPRING, Texas—A student from Bammel Middle School in Spring says her bus driver constantly drives recklessly, and last week she was injured as a result.
Seventh-grader Chelsea Murillo said she’s used to getting bounced around and sometimes getting knocked out of her seat.
"A lot of people start screaming, ‘We could have died,’" said Murillo. "One time, it nearly flipped over because he was going way too fast."
Last Monday, the bounce sent her foot flying under the seat and hit the bar.
"He was going too fast around the curve and didn’t slow down at all," said Murillo. She chipped a bone in her foot and ended up limping home.
When her mom saw what had happened, she was quick to get on the phone to Spring ISD.
"First I was furious," said Jennifer McLeod. "I calmed down a little bit and called the school. They said it had been taken care of."
But a week later, McLeod said that the driver is still on the bus, and she’s been told there are other victims, too.
"The supervisor told me other children have been injured because of this bus driver," said McLeod. "So, I want to know why he is still on the bus."
Spring ISD officials released a statement saying, in part:
"A parent’s complaint regarding bus route 132 was investigated by the Spring ISD Transportation Department. We take the safety of our students very seriously .The driver of route 132 is fully trained, properly licensed and has a good driving record."
But Murillo and her mom say that’s not good enough. The 12-year old will be dropped off in the morning, and her mom wants other parents to know what’s going on.
"I want everyone to know their child could be in danger on that particular bus," said McLeod.
