HOUSTON—A man returning home from the hospital with his sick father, was shot and killed late Sunday during a carjacking near Reliant Stadium, according to Houston police.

It happened at the San Marin apartments, located in the 8100 block of El Mundo at Holly Hall.

Salem Saif Al Mazroui, 28, and his father had gone to MD Anderson Cancer Center, where the father is being treated for cancer.

They had stopped at a mosque in the 6900 block of Almeda to pray and returned home around 10:15 p.m.

They were unloading the car when they were ambushed in the parking lot by two suspects, according to police.

"The assailant pulled out a pistol and shots were fired," said Sgt  RyanChandler. "Salem Saif was hit and died. I do not believe the father and son were aggressive; they just wanted to get away."

When the father and son tried to run from the robbers, one suspect opened fire and struck the younger Mazroui at least once.

"My brother and cousin picked him up and carried him to their car, but by the time they got there his soul had already left his body," said MA, a neighbor who recently met the father and son at a Ramadan celebration.

Al Mazroui was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.

"We miss him already ," said Salah Dean, a family friend. "We’re so sad that he died like that, you know."

Police believe the victims may have been targeted. The father told friends that he believes they were followed home from the mosque.

The suspects fled the scene in the victim’s black, four-door, 2008 Toyota Avalon, license plate number NDX-63T. The rental car was later found abandoned.

"What we do know is these crooks were very violent, very aggressive and certainly very dangerous," said HPD homicide investigator M. Miller. "We'd like to have some help in catching them, finding out who they are."

The family is from a small village in the mountains of Ras Al Khaimah, one of the emirates that make up the United Arab Emirates. They are well-known in the community.

The father, Saif Al Mazroui,  had been in Houston for about five months to receive treatment. His sons took turns traveling  here to look after their father.

Salem Saif Al Mazroui  had been here for a few weeks.

Al Mazroui was a captain in the UAE army and is survived by a wife and 2-month-old son, according to The National newspaper.

He was a newlywed who had just built a new home for his family.

"He was loved by the people around him, they said he was humorous a person who respects everyone around him," said MA. "He loved his father, mother and sister and went with them for treatment."

Other family members were traveling to Houston from the UAE.
