GALVESTON, Texas—Smoke from a grass fire on the east side of Galveston Bay blanketed parts of the county this morning, prompting a flood of phone calls, an official said.

Bruce Clawson, the city of Texas City’s Homeland Security director, sent phone messages to residents, letting them know of the situation.

“It’s an industrial town, and we received a lot of phone calls,” Clawson said. “We called and verified the source of the smoke, which smelled like a grass fire.”

Clawson learned the smoke was possibly coming from the Bolivar Peninsula or somewhere on the east side of Galveston Bay. League City emergency management officials also sent out a bulletin to residents shortly after 1 p.m. regarding the smoke, which is expected to continue blowing into the area.
