PALACIOS, Texas—Authorities were searching for two people after a a single-engine aircraft crashed into Matagorda Bay near Palacios on Sunday.
Lynn Lunsford of the FAA said witnesses heard the aircraft’s engine sputtering shortly after taking off from Pierce Field around 10 a.m.
The plane got about a mile and a half before crashing into the bay about 15 miles south of Palacios. It broke apart in about 10 to 12 feet of water, authorities said.
Authorities said two people were onboard the plane, but their condition or whereabouts were unknown.
The U.S. Coast Guard, Texas Parks and Wildlife and DPS were on the scene investigating, but the Coast Guard took over because the plane was submerged in water.
FAA and National Transportation Safety Board officials were en route to the scene.
