CHAMBERS COUNTY, Texas – A Mother’s Day family outing on the Trinity River ended in tragedy as a result of a boating accident on Sunday, deputies said.

According to the Chambers County Sheriff’s Office, it started when a family from the Mont Belvieu-Dayton area went out in a boat on the Trinity River to celebrate the holiday. The father was driving the boat while his wife watched their children ride behind them in the large tube.

Upon rounding a bend in the river near the Chambers-Liberty County line, the tube struck a partially submerged tree floating in their path, deputies said. After hitting the tree, the passengers were thrown into the water.

Deputies said the parents recovered them from the water and noticed their 16-year-old daughter was seriously injured from the collision with the tree. They then called 911 as they continued to head toward the Trinity River Bridge boat ramp.

Chambers County deputies were first to arrive, followed by the Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit and the Texas Parks and Wildlife.

Life Flight transported the injured girl to Memorial Hermann Hospital, where she later died, deputies said.

The girl's family arrived at the hospital and admitted yet another family member; her 24-year-old brother who also on the tube during the accident.  He was rushed into surgery and was later listed in stable condition.

No other injuries were reported.

The accident is being investigated by the Texas Parks and Wildlife with assistance from the Sheriff’s Office.
