TEXAS CITY, Texas— Residents living near Marathon’s refinery were awakened by sirens this morning after a spill of a diesel-like fuel.

The spill happened at about 4 a.m. but there was no health threat to the community, Texas City Homeland Security Coordinator Bruce Clawson said.

Crews were filling a tank with distillate when about 100 barrels spilled over, Clawson said. Marathon set off its internal alarms which startled some nearby residents.

Clawson said monitoring by members of the Texas City Fire Department throughout the morning did not detect any harmful emissions. There is a slight fuel smell in the area especially along 14th Street at the side of the refinery where the spill occurred, Clawson said.
