HOUSTON— It was an opening night to remember, for all the wrong reasons, after shots were fired during an argument inside a new after-hours lounge called Vibe.
The facility is located on Richmond Avenue not far from South Gessner.
It was just before 3 a.m. when Afkham Niazi was on his apartment balcony behind the building.
“I saw people scrambling left and right,” he said. “There was a guy with a laptop in his hand and he was running around back and forth. It was just too chaotic at that time.”
Back inside Vibe, there was chaos as the crowd ducked for cover amid heavy crossfire.
“They described it as dark inside,” said Houston Police Sgt. John French. “They could see the flashing of gunfire.”
By the time it ended, at least four people had been hit. One of them, a man believed to be in his mid 20s, had been killed.
A woman left the scene by ambulance and two injured men headed for a nearby hospital in a white Mercedes sedan.
Investigators initially said up to 20 rounds were fired by multiple weapons. An officer identified one of them as an AK-47.
It is still not clear who may have been the aggressor, or who may have acted in self defense.
None of the victims’ names have been released.
Anyone with information on the identity of the wanted suspect(s) is urged to contact the HPD Homicide Division at 713-308-3600 or Crime Stoppers at 713-222-TIPS.
