SPRING, Texas - Investigators are not yet blaming anyone for a Saturday morning crash that led to the death of a Harris County detention officer.

They said he was on a motorcycle headed west down FM 2920 near Kukendahl, when the driver of an SUV pulled out of a Kroger parking lot in front of him.

The impact caused the officer to be thrown and strike a car crossing the center lane.

Drivers were horrified, knowing all too well how easily an accident like that could happen.

“You just have to drive defensive, because people drive like idiots nowadays,” driver Linda Seal said.

Witnesses at the scene were reminded of that too, as a Life Flight helicopter swooped down. It took the off-duty officer to Memorial Hermann Hospital.

Though he was conscious for a moment, doctors could not save him. Precinct 4 is handling the investigation, and they say the officer was wearing a helmet. It was found damaged at the scene.
