HOUSTON – An 18-wheeler lost part of its load, sending shattered glass across the southbound lanes of Interstate 45 in downtown early Monday, Houston police said.

The incident occurred shortly before 3 a.m. near the exit for W. Dallas, according to Houston TranStar.

Police said the truck lost part of its load of glass panes on the freeway.

The driver came to a stop a short distance later, but an oncoming driver in a car apparently failed to see the mess.

“A short time later a vehicle traveling southbound on I-45 encountered the broken pieces, lost control and struck the concrete barrier along the side,” said HPD Sgt. Tim Trometer. “The driver at this time does not have any serious injuries.”

The glass was spread across two to three hundred yards along the freeway, and as of 7:30 a.m. only one lane of traffic was getting by, leading to a lengthy backup.

By 9 a.m. the freeway fully reopened.
