HOUSTON—Authorities believe a dispute over a stolen bicycle sparked a Christmas day brawl at a northwest Houston apartment complex.

Police responded to the Pines at Northwest Crossing Apartments around 5:30 p.m. Wednesday following reports of a fight.

Once there, officers observed dozens of men, women and children engaged in a large confrontation.

Witnesses said some people used crow bars to attack other people.

Leroy Ford said it started when a group of kids stole his son’s bicycle which had been given to him for Christmas.

“The next thing I knew these people took sticks and bottles and hit my mother-in-law in the head,” he said.

Some children got hurt.  One small boy was badly scratched in the face.  His mother claimed people had threatened them with guns.

Police even had to call in backup after an officer got punched in the face.

In the end, several people were arrested.  Several victims were taken to the hospital. Several others drove themselves to the hospital for treatment. Two police officers were taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

“This is outrageous,” said Ford.  “It’s barbaric.”
