GALVESTON — Mardi Gras is a time for free spirits. This week, the city council will decide if it also will be a time for free parking.
The council is scheduled to vote Thursday on an ordinance that would waive the $1-an-hour or $8-a-day parking fees on Seawall Boulevard during Mardi Gras. And with less than two weeks until the kickoff of this year’s event, council members appear split about whether the charge should apply during a time when an estimated 250,000 people visit the island.
Mayor Lewis Rosen said Monday he was firmly on the side of charging for parking during Mardi Gras.
