SANTA FE, Texas — Police accused an alleged drunken driver of hitting a garbage worker with her side mirror Saturday and failing to stop and render aid.

The suspect was traveling westbound about 5 p.m. in the 14000 block of state Highway 6, when she attempted to pass a garbage truck and struck a worker standing on the rear step of the truck, according to a Santa Fe police news release.

The right mirror of the suspect’s Ford F-250 struck the worker with such force that the mirror broke off and shattered the passenger side window, according to the release.

She drove about three quarters of a mile before turning off state Highway 6, where police found her, according to the release.

Kearston Leigh Schroeder, 42, of Dickinson, was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, accident involving injury and resisting arrest, according to the release. Bond was set at $21,500, according to the sheriff’s office Web site.

Schroeder refused to provide a blood specimen but was subject to a mandatory blood test because of the victim’s injuries, according to the release.

The victim was treated at Mainland Medical Center for injuries that were not life-threatening, according to the release.
