Jolanda Jones loses City Council seat in Houston runoff elections

HOUSTON -- Jolanda Jones lost her seat in the City Council after falling to Jack Christie in Saturday’s Houston runoff elections.

Christie beat Councilwoman Jones 55 percent to 45 percent to take the At-Large Position 5 seat. It marked the fifth time since 2007, counting general elections and runoffs, the two had faced off.

In the other races, Helena Brown, another challenger, won the District A seat after receiving 55 percent of the vote against incumbent Brenda Stardig’s 45 percent.

Both challengers, Christie and Brown, are the first to defeat a City Council incumbent in 12 years.

n District B, Jerry Davis tallied 51 percent of the votes to beat Alvin Byrd, who got 49 percent. Davis will replace Councilman Jarvis Jones.

Finally, Pastor Andrew Burks edged former state representative Kris Thibaut to win the At-Large 2 position. Burks will replace outgoing councilwoman Sue Lovell.
