HOUSTON—Baytown police are on the hunt for two armed robbers who terrorized employees and a customer at a jewelry store.
It happened Wednesday around 11:20 a.m. in the 4500 block of Garth Road.
The owner of Shay’s Jewelry and Gifts said it began when a well-dressed man walked in asking to look at engagement rings.
She believes he propped open the door to the business, which is usually locked. A second man walked in shortly thereafter and headed toward the back of the store.
“It’s just your worst nightmare,” said the owner of Shay’s, who declined to give her full name. “It’s frightening. It takes the joy out of my work. It takes the joy out of my business.”
The long-time owner of Shay’s said she followed the instructions of the man wearing a tie. She and a customer were ordered to lie on the ground in the front of the store.
Her daughter, who is an employee, and a jeweler were confronted in the back by the second robber. He tied the two up using plastic zip ties.
“At one point, he threatened our jeweler. He threatened him that it would be a homicide and not a simple robbery,” said the owner’s daughter.
They were faced with threats shortly after the man in the tie began filling out a credit card application. The two men took off with an unknown amount of jewelry.
The family now prays that surveillance video helps give investigators the upper hand in catching the criminals.
“They’re cold-blooded selfish people that are too lazy to get out and work for a living like the rest of us,” added the owner. “I’ve been in business 34 years, worked my whole life here. This is my 34th Christmas, and for it to start out this way, it’s very sad.”
