GALVESTON COUNTY -- The Great Dane that gained national attention after photos showed her in a blood-smeared cage in a Galveston County animal shelter may not have been abused as first reported.

A veterinarian for the rescue group that saved Nina said she broke a tooth while biting an animal control officer’s catch pole, which is the reason for the blood shown in previous pictures. The dog did not suffer any fractures.

The cruelty investigation is ongoing and although Nina is in quarantine, she will eventually be handed over to an area rescue group.
