HOUSTON—First, it was starting quarterback Matt Schaub, then backup Matt Leinart went out due to injury for the Houston Texans. Next up was third-string quarterback T.J. Yates.
Many Texans fans said they hadn’t even heard of Yates prior to Sunday’s game in Jacksonville.
T.J. Yates was the Texans fifth-round draft pick from the University of North Carolina this year.
Fans who grabbed lunch at the Houston Texans Grille in west Houston Monday chimed in about the new guy under center.
"Matt Leinart, we know what we had, but with a guy like Yates, there’s a lot of potential and that’s exciting all by itself," Scott Schneider said.
"I’m a real, die-hard fan. I love the Texans, but to be honest, I just don’t think we’re going to make it out of the first round," another fan, Iyesha Walker, added.
Overall, fans weren’t too disappointed with Yates’ performance in Sunday’s win over the Jaguars.
"Really don’t know his capabilities, but he seemed to manage the game pretty well when he came in," Dan Steele said.
The question that has yet to be answered is whether Yates is the answer for the Texans, now that Leinart will have to undergo surgery for a broken collarbone.
